9b: Brainstorming Visual Aids

I could use pictures of: past presidents, music bands, wars, people, places, etc.

I could also use graphs or charts for demo purposes.

I could use newspaper clippings of headlines.

I'm thinking clippings of war slogans, technology articles, pictures that help describe anything I'm talking about.

9a: Writing Thesis Statements

Over the course of the last 100 years in America, there have been many political, social and cultural changes.

There have been many social, political and cultural changes in the last 100 years in the US.

Socially, culturally and politically the US has changed dramatically since the early 1900's.

6c: Planning Field Research

As far as my field research goes I am going to interview my grandfather who is now 83 I think. I'm going to send him everything via email, and I can have it done by the time we come back from spring break. He was just out here on vacation and he's going around the US visiting all the family so he should be back sometime after the 17th of March. If the email portion doesn't work out, I'll call him, I have a feeling I'll get way more information that way, and be able to come up with some questions on the fly as well.

List of questions I will ask him:

Age? DOB?
What do think were significant events in America, during the course of your life?
Do you think the population would agree with you?
What events or people do you remember clearly to this day, that the rest of America would share with you?
Do you think socially America has moved forward?
Do you think the American lifestyle has changed drastically? How so?
What was your favor era, up till the present?
What events or people do you think have been forgotten by the younger generation?
As far as technology goes what do think has been the biggest advancement?

6a: Using Internet Search Tools

I use google for everything! I mean everything: maps, music, questions, travel, work. Anything and everything you can think of! The other week I googled "can you wear pinstripe pants with plain jacket". If I don't know, most likely google will tell me. I've checked a lot of the metacrawlers and everyone of them pulls from google. If I have to use something else, like for this paper, I typically use the major newspaper websites. No ink dust and it costs you no money, no wonder the Rocky Mnt closed down, I can't remember the last time I looked a printed newspaper.

The only downfall to google is the same you would have with any other search engine, by not putting in the correct information it's going to take awhile to find what you're looking for. Such as googling a song you heard on the radio and you only know some of the words. I just take what I think it is and go to you tube and listen. It might take fifteen minutes but it's a lot faster than calling the radio station.

4c: Checking Search Strings

The verification letters never loaded so I couldn't post here are my comments:

http://tjenkinsresearchjournal.blogspot.com/2009/02/3b-writing-search-strings.html#comment-form
Per teacher I need to post a comment. First thing that comes to mind would be ... white power and it wasn't included in your string. Next things would be racial, black + KKK

I like how you laid yours out, race in politics is new to me, so I think you covered everything. Looks good!

I can also go to http://www.denverpost.com/archives and go back as far as 1993 online there is lots of info on Obama and the Iraq war, but I can only use this link for the most recent events. So I'm there http://www.nytimes.com/ I had to register to read their articles, probably so they can spam me. So I use their search engine http://query.nytimes.com/search/query?srchst=nyt&&srcht=a&srchr=n and type in world war II The second link is this article:Japanese Data Show Tokyo Tried To Make World War II A-Bomb; DATA SHOW JAPANESE TRIED TO MAKE BOMB Army and Navy Compete

3c: Brainstorming Field Research Options

I already know I'm going to use my grandpa as my field research source, seeing as he is almost 90 years old. He worked the railroads for a number of years and for a good part of his life he was a trucker. He is very big into politics and economics. He has been around for a long time. So he could probably point out things that were significant to him over the years.

Or I could go to the Colorado history museum, www.coloradohistory.org, and look around. The problem is it may have a lot of things that are too specific to Colorado verses the nation as a whole.

Since Elvis was an icon in the 50s, I'm headed out to Vegas in two weeks. I'm sure there are still people around that have met him, actually my great-aunt's met him but just in passing. There are plenty of Elvis museums, music programs/shows out in Vegas to watch.

A survey would be cool, to compare what events/music/technology was important to the different age groups and how they vary. I could send out a mass email to friends and family asking them to fill it out and return to me, and write about my findings if they were the same and what the differences were.

I could always sit in on a lecture at school. Maybe someone in women's studies or history. That's the cool thing about my topic it's broad enough where I can include pretty much anything it just needs to be significant to the times.

2c: Developing My Research Question

1. What happened during Bill Clinton's presidency?
2. Why did we go to war in Vietnam?
3. When did the recession start?
4. Where did Elvis die?
5. Who was the president in 1940?
6. How did technology advance so much?
7. Could the Kuwait war have been prevented?
8. Should we have voted for Obama?
9. Who was the most important woman of the 1960s?
10. Where were the jim crow states located?

2. I would say the best question is What happened during Bill Clinton's presidency, because it encompasses all of my questions in a sense. It allows me to include more information than just facts about Bill Clinton.

3. What significant issue happened during Bill Clinton's presidency?

4. NO

5. When I did a search I didn't get to many hits:

2b: Narrowing My Topic

Now that I have looked around a little and found that there is entirely too much information out there that I can go off of. I'm thinking I can steer clear of the climate change stuff, I would that's a whole other paper in itself. I'm leaving out the politics because I've never really gotten into it, besides everyone has an opinion on it, I don't think it's fact based enough for me. I want to talk about the people and how they have changed over the years as more of a social standpoint. Things like the women's movement, apartheid, Vietnam, technology in the 80s, and maybe try and throw in a little about music. Such as what was the number one song for that year, did they even have that back when. Spending more time researching the topic and maybe writing out an overview can help me narrow it down. I just don't want to narrow it down to far, as there are fifteen pages to write. I want to write my paper more as any overview of the years than really getting down into it. I feel writing that way I can get out more information and interesting facts than just writing about something such as women's change over the last 100 years.

2a: Exploring My Topic

Thus far I am only searching the Internet for my information. I've come across a lot of interesting things that are giving me more ideas about what exactly to write about. As of now I'm thinking of doing my paper in terms of the presidential eras. Under that the social changes that happened and wars. I'm still thinking of ways to tie them together. I don't want to get to political in my paper. I really want to talk more about the people and how they lived. I want to some how incorporate new technologies as well, maybe I can do that with the wars; the atom bomb and so forth. I did find information on everything from how people dressed to climate change over the past 100 years. There is a lot of different topics I can talk about. I have listed some of the websites I found, and I have bookmarked more on my delicious account.

1c: Delicious Account

Here is the link to my delicious account http://delicious.com/angelinasmit

1b: My Topic

I decided on the topic of The Last 100 Years In America. I figure there should be plenty to write about in fifteen pages. There are plenty of sources I can use and it's not a hard topic. I figure I can write it in terms of presidents instead of by decades. Such as under this president we had a war, something was invented, new laws were passed, and so on and so forth. The recent election, got me to thinking how society in America has changed so much from 100 years ago.

I never been a history buff or anything but I know some of the presidents, inventions, social things that have happened in the last 50 years. I know technology wise we have progressed further than we ever have before in the last 25 years. We are now doing stem cell research on humans and Elvis has been dead awhile. There is so much that has happened in the last just 20 years, let alone the last 100. I kind of want to put 1920 and 2008 side by side just to see how drastic the differences are.

Pretty much anything prior to 1940 I'm kinda in the dark. I want to get a little more in depth on things, specifically things that people my age may have forgotten or never knew about. I know there was a man on the moon and I know Elvis died, but I don't know when and my guess wouldn't even be close. I know we went to war in Vietnam, but how long were we there and who sent the troops over there? I just have so many questions, on things that are said in passing. You've heard about it, but never really looked it up. How long was the Depression in the 30's and was it even in the 30's? These would be things you'd think every American would know, and I'm embarrassed to say I don't. Did blacks get the right to vote before women? Therefore this paper is going to be the most informative paper I have done to date. Also I think it is a topic everyone can relate to.

1a: Possible Topics

You would think coming up with ideas for a paper would be easy, naw. I suck at brainstorming, especially when I have to think of ideas that can encompass a fifteen page paper. First thoughts that come to mind are: The Holocaust, Aids in Africa, War in Iraq, Illegals in America, The economy, The depression of the 1930's, The last 100 years in America.
