I already know I'm going to use my grandpa as my field research source, seeing as he is almost 90 years old. He worked the railroads for a number of years and for a good part of his life he was a trucker. He is very big into politics and economics. He has been around for a long time. So he could probably point out things that were significant to him over the years.
Or I could go to the Colorado history museum, www.coloradohistory.org, and look around. The problem is it may have a lot of things that are too specific to Colorado verses the nation as a whole.
Since Elvis was an icon in the 50s, I'm headed out to Vegas in two weeks. I'm sure there are still people around that have met him, actually my great-aunt's met him but just in passing. There are plenty of Elvis museums, music programs/shows out in Vegas to watch.
A survey would be cool, to compare what events/music/technology was important to the different age groups and how they vary. I could send out a mass email to friends and family asking them to fill it out and return to me, and write about my findings if they were the same and what the differences were.
I could always sit in on a lecture at school. Maybe someone in women's studies or history. That's the cool thing about my topic it's broad enough where I can include pretty much anything it just needs to be significant to the times.
